Proposition Team Memorial Walk - Day Six

21/06/2024

The Proposition Team and friends are walking the Cotswold Way in memory of their much-loved colleague and friend Angie Maddams who sadly passed away on Sunday 15 October.

Angie joined The Openwork Partnership in 1986 and spent over a decade working with the Proposition team. In memory of Angie, the Proposition Team are walking the challenging 102-mile Cotswold Way over 7 days, from the 16th to the 22nd of June to raise funds for The Openwork Foundation.

Here are the highlights from day six

Walked by Maria Bishop, Abbie May and Chris Hallatt.

"Our starting point was the Town Hall in the lovely little village of Dursley. The trail began with a steep climb up into woodland and out onto Stinchcombe Hill. As we carried on we were met by the very impressive Tyndale Monument, built in 1866 in memory of William Tyndale who translated the bible into English. The monument has 200 steps you can climb to the viewing platform. Chris was going to climb these then decided to save his energy!

After a few more miles we made it to the village of Wotton-under-Edge. This completed the first part of our walk which totalled 5.2 miles, with an elevation gain of 997ft taking 2 hours. We decided we deserved a coffee and cake 'to go' as we still had 9 miles to cover.

The second part of the walk was from Wotton-under-Edge to Hawkesbury Upton. We proceeded our yomping pace but were slowed down due to parts of the walk being more like the Amazon than a scenic walk!

On our final stretch we came across the Somerset Monument dating back to 1846. This was erected in memory of General Lord Somerset who served under Wellington at the battle of Waterloo. With 144 steps up to the viewing platform we again decided to save our energy for the last stretch!

We made it to the finish line at Hawkesbury Upton at approx. 3.30pm. This completed the two stages of our walk, with the second part having a total elevation gain of 1165ft! We celebrated with lunch on a bench in the sunshine at Hawkesbury Village Hall."
